For the second year in a row, State Historic Preservation Officer, Brian Conway, presented Wolverine Building Group with the Michigan Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation. Wolverine’s Elaine Apartments project was a major historical building rehabilitation in downtown Jackson, MI. The project was recognized for its transformation into a high quality structure and a vital economic asset. The historic structure was originally built in 1865 and in 1929 was renovated into apartments, keeping the People’s National Bank on the first floor. Wolverine Building Group restored the 34,400 sq. ft. building’s historical detail, while modernizing the building to provide affordable senior apartment housing. The final renovation included 33 apartment units, increased accessibility, new community spaces, and added amenities not previously available to residents.

“We are honored to accept this award. The overall experience was a great success on many levels. By completing this inspiring structure, I believe Elaine Apartments will continue to play an important role in the revitalization of downtown Jackson, MI,” said Marcus Ringnalda, Project Manager of Wolverine Building Group.

About the Michigan Governor’s Award for Historic Preservation

Historic resources and archaeological sites tell us about the past and help us maintain Michigan’s unique identity. Their preservation is vital to Michigan’s present and future as they contribute to vibrant communities and our understanding of the past. Each year the State Historic Preservation Office and the

State Historic Preservation Review Board identifies worthy recipients to receive the Governor’s Awards for Historic Preservation, which are presented in May during National Historic Preservation Month. The awards recognize homeowners who rehabilitate their homes; developers who transform underutilized historic structures into vital economic assets; and academic institutions, archaeologists, nonprofits, and local governments—among others—who strive to preserve Michigan’s important historic and cultural resources.
