Wolverine Building Group, Fifth Third Ballpark Celebrate Opening Day
Grand Rapids, MI – (April 9, 2014) Wolverine Building Group and the West Michigan Whitecaps celebrated three milestones on April 8, 2014 – the 20th anniversary of the ballpark’s original construction, the home opener of the Whitecaps’ 21st season, and the first game to follow the ballpark’s fire in January 2014.
General Contractor Wolverine Building Group completed the original construction of the ballpark, then known as Old Kent Park, in 1994. Project superintendent Fred Gilbert oversaw construction of Old Kent Park for Wolverine, and returned to the park for the restoration work after the fire, as well as to make other minor modifications. Wolverine Building Group teamed with architect ProgressiveAE on the fast-track renovation project.
Demolition began on January 18, after fire investigators released the site to Wolverine. That allowed only 80 calendar days for demolition and rebuilding in time for opening day.
More than 7,100 fans came to the park for the opening day celebration. The balance of the restorations will be completed in time for the 50th Midwest League All-Star game on June 17.
Wolverine Building Group is celebrating their 75th anniversary this year. For more information about Wolverine Building Group, please visit www.wolvgroup.com.
