Transformation Begins at Historic UP School

Grand Rapids, MI – (March 27, 2013) Developer Tim Hovey with the Gryphon Group is pleased to announce that the rehabilitation of the old Central School in the City of Iron River, Michigan is approved for construction commencement. Mr. Hovey closed with the equity provider – Lake Michigan Financial Corporation (Holland, MI), construction financing – The Bank of Northern Michigan (Traverse City, MI), and permanent financing – MSHDA (Lansing, MI) in March 2013 and construction is scheduled to begin in April.

Originally constructed in 1902 as a high school, Central School also served as an elementary / middle school, and closed down in 1980. Realizing the building’s potential and importance in revitalizing the community’s core, the property was purchased by the Iron River Downtown Development Authority in 2004. The City and the DDA have been great supporters of the development both economically and in spirit.

General contractor Wolverine Building Group and architect Barry J. Polzin will soon begin work on the $6.6 Million adaptive reuse project to transform the century-old school into Apple Blossom Apartments. Comprised of 22 affordable one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, this historic preservation development will provide much needed housing for the citizens of Iron River.

“I’m eager to take part in the transformation of this unique community landmark,” says Wolverine’s Project Manager Marcus Ringnalda. “The City of Iron River has been immensely supportive of the project and it will be exciting to be part of the team bringing the vision to reality.”

The project is scheduled for completion in December 2013. Apple Blossom is an Enterprise Green -certified sustainable project to reduce life cycle costs and environmental impact, and to provide a healthier environment for residents.
