Living Stones Academy Phase 1 & 2
4,500 Sq Ft (Ph. 1)
Repeat Client Continues to Build More Room
Project Overview
In phase two of Living Stones Academy’s expansion, this repeat client of Wolverine Building Group is building two classrooms, a large new community space, a new library and additional offices.
Wolverine Building Group completed phase one of the project with the addition of three classrooms of the growing school, which serves students from kindergartens to sixth grade. Our team also modified the existing structure with the addition of an improved fire protection system, new fire alarms, new windows, and the renovation of one classroom.
Due to the extensive amount of work required for this project, the construction schedule overlaps with Living Stones’ academic year. In the project’s earliest stages, our team created safety and logistics plans that met the schedule dates with consideration given to the students, faculty, staff, and daily needs of Living Stones Academy.
As the team entered phase two of the project, excavation uncovered a significant issue as the team prepped for the multi-purpose gathering space. The school had been built adjacent to a long-abandoned landfill with centuries old trash creating unstable fill. The foundation would not continue for this space as planned!
The team quickly reassessed and identified another solution. First, they bored down and found the trash went down 13 feet. Next, they tested the soil compression with a steel helical pier that reached adequate weight bearing load, once screwed into the soil at 40 feet. Approximately 30 helical piers will be used to reinforce the concrete foundation around the east side addition to keep the foundation stable well into the future.
