COMPLEX HISTORIC RENOVATION IN NORTHERN MICHIGAN

Project Overview

Wolverine Building Group performed a complex historical renovation to the Cottage 36 building located within the Village at Grand Traverse Commons in Traverse City, Michigan.

The project involved transforming the 35,000-square-foot, four-story building into an affordable housing complex with 29 units. The building originally served as a ward for male residents at the Traverse City State Hospital. An extensive overhaul was completed to form units ranging from 500- to 750-square-feet for a one bedroom, 750- to 1,000-square-feet for a two-bedroom, and up to 1,200-square-feet for a three-bedroom. Each unit features high-end finishes including polished hardwood floors, granite counter tops and showers, skylights, and exposed brick walls.

The project was completed in response to a lack of affordable housing in the area and was funded, in part, by Historic Tax credits and by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority. Our team is extremely skilled at building and renovating affordable housing structures in accordance with these tax credits, which allowed us to excel at this project.
