Major Renovation Complete at GVSU
October 10, 2014 (Allendale, MI) – Wolverine Building Group is pleased to announce the completion of the James H. Zumberge Hall Addition and Renovation project at Grand Valley State University’s Allendale campus.
The James H. Zumberge Library has been a highly visible part of Grand Valley State University’s Allendale campus since its original construction in 1969. With the addition of a new library in 2013, it was time to update this historic building. Wolverine Building Group worked alongside Via Design to maintain the striking mid-century design elements of the former library while preparing it for its new incarnation as a modern, high-tech administrative space.
This project consisted of a complete renovation of the existing building, and the ground-up construction of an addition, to expand the facility to more than 90,000 square feet. The five-story addition houses a covered parking area on the ground level with four levels of office and conference room space on upper floors. The glass and concrete exteriors tie in the existing building and addition for a seamless combination of mid-century and contemporary architecture.
For over 40 years, the James H. Zumberge Library served as GVSU’s main library. Named for the institution’s first President, the cast-in-place concrete facility received several architectural awards when first constructed. The new James H. Zumberge Hall has consolidated several departments at its convenient location near the center of campus, and will allow the university to free up much-needed classroom space in other buildings. The project has a goal of Silver-level LEED Certification.
