The City of Iron River, the Iron River Downtown Development Authority and Tim Hovey of the Gryphon Group is pleased to announce a groundbreaking and ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the rehabilitation and renovation of the historic Central School into the Apple Blossom Apartments. The ceremony will take place at the site located at 218 West Cayuga Street, Iron River at 11 AM CT on June 5, 2013. The public is invited to attend.

The conversion of Central School into the Apple Blossom Apartments will include 22 apartments. The project was approved by the Michigan State Housing Development Authority earlier this year and work has been ongoing since March. The developer, Gryphon Group, hired architect Barry Polzin from Marquette and general contractor Wolverine Building Group who will be employing many local and regional subcontractors. The Gryphon Group was also the developer of the Crystal View Apartments in Crystal Falls completed in 2010; that project involved the rehabilitation and renovation of the historic Crystal Manor into 25 apartments that are currently all leased.

“Iron River is extremely pleased that this project is taking off. I am confident that these apartments will be leased to residents who will be able to enjoy our small town lifestyle without the headaches of home ownership,” said Mayor Terry Tarsi.

Jim Gibula, chair of the Downtown Development Authority, stated: “I am excited that the DDA was able to partner with Hovey – a company with a proven track record of successfully completing projects such as this. Apple Blossom Apartments will provide affordable housing and will also preserve an historic building that has deep roots in this community.”

Central School was constructed in 1904 and was occupied by the Iron River school system until 1980. It was placed on the National Historic Register in 2008.
